|Will other email programs work with the KidMail.net Safe Messaging Service?
Yes! In fact, we encourage the use of other email client software with KidMail.net as your children mature. For example, IncrediMail is a fun program for pre-teens and teenagers. Outlook, Eudora, Netscape Communicator, OperaMail, The Bat, and other commercial POP3/SMTP email software designed for adults will also work well with KidMail.net. Many parents prefer to teach their children to use Microsoft Outlook Express for kid's email. KidMail.net provides the necessary parental controls (email supervison) for Microsoft Outlook to be a safe email client for kids. Apple Mac users can use Mac Mail for OS-X, Eudora, and many other Mac email clients with KidMail.net safe email.
You might also decide to use another child's email client entirely (so long as it is also POP3 & SMTP compatible, as is usually the case).
For example, an alternative email client for young children is KidzMail (not published by KidMail). This product places great emphasis on sending image files. Their description: "With KidzMail children draw pictures and send them to people in their address book. Addressing email is as simple as choosing recipients from a list of pictures and names. Even if children can't read the names they can pick out the pictures. Parents control the address book, so they know who their children are sending email to. KidzMail sends real email that any email client will accept. Pictures are sent as both JPEGs (a popular picture format found on the Internet) and KidzMail pictures."
Another kids email consideration is language.
KidMail v4.0 is presently only available in English, but the IncrediMail email software is available in many languages, including French, German, Japanese, Spanish, Dutch, Swedish, Portuguese, and Italian.
In Japan, a highly popular email client for Japanese school children is PostPet. This cute animated email software has qualities somewhat like "the Sims". (In fact, we'd love to see a real Sims Email). PostPet deploys virtual pets to send and receive email. Here's how they describe this unusual email client for kids:"The PostPet program provides you with a pet who delivers your mail. Select your favorite pet out of the 10 available. The pet normally stays inside his home. The pet goes about ordinary pet life -- playing, thinking, sleeping, etc. You can dress up your pet with the wide selection of accessories. Your pet lives in a single-family home with arrangeable furniture and other objects. You can warp your house to new locations. If you write an email and select "Give to pet", The pet will leave the house with your mail in hand. If the recipient of the email also has PostPet, your pet will show up at her room, and leave the letter there." Full text: http://www.postpet.so-net.ne.jp/en/
The bottomline: With KidMail.net safe email you are not restricted to a single email program for your kids. Many email programs are available that are suitable and age appropriate for kids. We make the decision easy by providing an excellent email client for children ages 5-9 (or preschool age with help from mom o
